We don’t often go out to eat in France , partially because its
incredibly difficult to find a decent vegetarian offering. A typical exchange when asking if a vegetable
dish is vegetarian, often goes something like this – “yes, of course,
completely vegetarian, its just vegetables and lardons (bacon).” So, when
we do want to go out to celebrate something, as was the case last night(!), we often end up at La
Faim Des Haricots. This is a really excellent vegetarian
restaurant, with a few branches in the Toulouse
area, one of which is just up the road from us.
It’s not very expensive, and its an all you can eat buffet of veggie
goodness!
The buffet works in a slightly odd way: there are five
courses offered – tartes salées
(quiches), soup of the day (winter only), daily dish, salads, and desserts/ice
cream – and you simply decide which of these courses you would like to
eat. The base price is 11 euros for two
of these courses, and then an additional euro for each additional course you
choose (e.g. 12 euros for three courses, 13 euros for four courses, etc.). We
usually go for the tartes salées, salads, and desserts, since they are always
excellent, but the soup and daily dish seem to be a bit variable.
The restaurant’s name means ‘the hunger of the beans’ and is
a play on the expression la fin des
haricots, translating roughly to ‘the end of the world’ or ‘the goose is
cooked.’
I highly recommend this restaurant to any vegetarians
visiting Toulouse . The staff are very welcoming (and most can
speak English, if need be) the food is excellent, the atmosphere is friendly
and a bit bohemian…it’s really a gem!
Caution – when
dining out in Toulouse, most restaurants do not open before 7 or 7:30 pm, and
often will not specify their hours on a helpful sign like in the UK and USA (La
Faim Des Haricots is usually open for
dinner by around 7:15). Relax – it’s France ! Do what the locals do and go have a pastis at a nearby café while you wait
for the restaurant to open excruciatingly slowly, as you get more and more
hungry! : P
